Scope and Content Swimming Pool, Bruntsfield Primary School, Montpelier, Edinburgh Bruntsfield Primary School was built as a School Board school in 1895, and opened with an intake of over 500 pupils between the ages of five and 13. The interior was photographed in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The pool has wooden seats for bathers around the walls, and separate changing cubicles for boys and girls. The ropes over the pool run on pulleys, and offered support to pupils as they practised their strokes. Boys and girls received lessons separately. The School Board encouraged the inclusion of physical exercise within the school's curriculum, as it was seen as a good thing for discipline, and an important Victorian value which helped to produce 'a healthy mind and a healthy body'.
