Scope and Content Classroom, Bruntsfield Primary School, Montpelier, Edinburgh Bruntsfield Primary School, designed by the architect, Robert Wilson, opened in 1895 as a Board School of Edinburgh. This classroom was photographed in 1895 by distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The classroom could accommodate over 80 pupils. It was heated by an open fire with the teacher's desk being closest to the source of heat. The pupils' desks and chairs could fold up neatly as a single unit, and held the slates on which the children wrote. Victorian lessons concentrated on the three 'R's' - reading, writing and arithmetic. The teacher would chalk most of the lesson on the blackboard for the class to copy onto their slates, or to recite parrot-fashion until word perfect. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
