Scope and Content Main Dining Room, The George Hotel, Nos 19-21 George Street, Edinburgh The George Hotel developed as a remodelling of the upper floors of three Georgian townhouses by the architects, MacGibbon & Ross, in 1879. The distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, photographed the interior in 1910. The decoration of the room seems to be of an earlier period - the cornice, the panelled walls, now filled with paper, and the great mirror over the marble fireplace. The long table, decked with flowers and fruit, appears to be set for an important party. The George Hotel incorporated part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town. The hotel claimed to be 'furnished to the standards of the best hotels in London', and provided accommodation for the rich and affluent middle classes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
