Scope and Content Main Staircase, Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh Edinburgh College of Art, designed in 1906-9 by John More Dick Peddie, stands on an impressive north-facing site at the west end of Lauriston Place. This photograph of the interior of the college was taken by Harry Bedford Lemere in 1909. This double-return stair with its stone balustrade rises from the entrance hall below to the galleries on the upper floor. It is lit from lunette windows and a huge octagonal cupola, and has paired Ionic columns and pilasters at first-floor level. The college, built in two phases, was completed in 1912. The view from Johnston Terrace and the Castle Esplanade was considered important, and the building's high French roofs were intended to make a picturesque contribution to the Edinburgh skyline.
