Scope and Content Edinburgh Public Library (now the Edinburgh Central Public Library), George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, from the south-west This photograph of the east front of the Edinburgh Public Library was taken in 1893 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The library, designed by Sir George Washington Browne, opened in 1890 with a collection of 75,000 books. The library was designed in the style of Françoise I with an elaborate east front, and a circular turret on an octagonal base in south-east angle. It is reached by its own bridge from the street since it actually stands in the Cowgate four storeys below. The Edinburgh Public Library was not the first library in Edinburgh as there were existing law libraries, private circulating libraries and collections belonging to working men's institutes, but, as a public library, it offered general access to all.
