Scope and Content Bedroom, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh Craigcrook Castle, which dates from the 16th century, was leased to the Croall family in 1875. This photograph of a bedroom was taken in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Bedford Lemere, when the castle was the residence of Mr R Douglas Croall. This simple cottage-style bedroom under the eaves has Chintz covers and curtains, and a washstand at the window. The twin beds, with wooden bedsteads, have silk-covered eiderdowns, quilts stuffed with down feathers, for the upper layer of bedclothes. Twin beds, regarded as something of a novelty in the 1890s, were common by the 1920s. Plumbed-in basins were also commonly found in dressing rooms or bedrooms. They saved time, were more hygienic than washstands, and ensured hot water when required. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
