Scope and Content Garden Gateway, Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh This photograph of the gateway to Craigcrook Castle was taken in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The castle, built in a splendid woodland setting at the foot of Corstorphine Hill, dates from the 16th century. This round-arched gateway is set in a 17th-century wall which encloses the garden. It leads into a courtyard at the east end of the house, and is topped with obelisk finials and a semicircular strapwork pediment bearing the date 1626. The castle was built for William Adamson who bought the Craigcrook estate in 1542, and was killed at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. His descendant, Walter Adamson, extended the house in 1626 and probably built the wall and gateway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
