Scope and Content South front of Craigcrook Castle, Craigcrook Road, Edinburgh, looking west Craigcrook Castle was built in the 16th century as a tower-house for an Edinburgh merchant. It was altered in the 19th century, and photographed in 1927 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, for the then owner, Mr R Douglas Croall. The 17th-century south front, with its row of pedimented dormer windows, was altered in the 19th century. The original round tower of the castle stands at its south-west corner with canon-spouts projecting from below its crenellated parapet. The castle was built for William Adamson who bought the Craigcrook estate in 1542 and was killed at the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. The original house was Z-plan, with a round tower at the south-west corner, and a square stair-tower at the north-east. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
