Scope and Content Houldsworth's (Anderston) Cotton Mill, No 93 Cheapside Street, Glasgow This works was built in about 1804-6 for Henry Houldsworth, for spinning fine cotton yarn. It was the first fireproof mill in Glasgow. It was extended in about 1860, but closed in 1878 and became a bonded warehouse. Part of the 1804-6 mill collapsed in 1964 under the weight of the whisky being stored in it. This shows the attic of the northern section of the 1804-6 mill as revealed by the 1964 collapse. It can be deduced that the rows of columns on the floor originally had counterparts in the attic, and that the central column and heavy beam are modifications. The slender roof trusses appeared to be made of cast-iron sections bolted together, masterpieces of the iron founder's art. The 1964 collapse ended the use of the building, and it was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
