Scope and Content Mile End Mill, Anchor Thread Works, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills were founded in 1812 by J & J Clark to make sewing thread, which was a Paisley speciality. They, however, used cotton, rather than the traditional linen. The trade expanded enormously with the mass production of sewing machines from the 1860s, and with it the Anchor Mills. This shows the west end of the Mile End Mill, the last large addition to the mills. This was built in 1899-1900, and designed by W J Morley of Bradford, architect. On the right is the central boiler house, with part of its chimney. J & J Clark amalgamated in 1890 with J & P Coats of the Ferguslie Mills at the other end of Paisley. Both had extensive mills overseas, behind tariff barriers. In the 1970s the combine began to run down both Paisley mills, and they closed in the early 1980s. Most of the buildings have been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
