Scope and Content John Brown's Shipyard, Kilbowie, Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire This yard was founded in 1870 by J & G Thomson, whose earlier Clyde Bank yard at Mavisbank, Glasgow, was required for harbour extension. The name was eventually applied to the town. In the ownership of John Brown & Co Ltd it built the 'Queen Mary' and the 'Queen Elizabeth'. This shows the yard from the south-east, looking across the River Clyde, with the hull of the ship ultimately named 'Queen Elizabeth II' being built. The crane on the left was built in 1906 for fitting out ships. Some of the other cranes date back to the 1920s, the rest are post-World War II. The 'Queen Elizabeth II' was the last passenger liner built at Clydebank, and the last ship was launched from the yard in 1971. It then became an oil-rig construction yard, which it remained until 2002. It has now been cleared for redevelopment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
