Scope and Content Rolling Lift Bridge over White Cart, Inchinnan Road, Renfrew, Renfrewshire This bridge was built in 1924 to carry what was then the main road from Glasgow to Greenock and Gourock over the White Cart Navigation. It replaced an earlier opening bridge. It is of the Scherzer rolling lift type, the only one on a main road in Scotland. This shows the bridge from the east, with the control rooms flanking the lifting span. The span has a curved end, with a counterweight to balance the weight of the span over the navigation. An electric motor can open the span quickly and easily. The White Cart Navigation was closed to Paisley in 1968, but was retained in operational condition as far as the Babcock & Wilcox works at Renfrew to handle exceptionally large loads. It is probably technically still open for this purpose. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
