Scope and Content Weaver's Cottage, The Cross, Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire This cottage, or rather substantial house, was built in 1723 for a linen weaver and draper. Its size suggests that it was used as a base for putting out yarn to other weavers to be made up into cloth. It is certainly much larger than the house of a single weaver would be expected to be. This shows the building from the south-east. The pitch of the roof suggests that it was originally thatched. The lower storey on the left was latterly used as a weaving shop, and currently houses a demonstration hand loom. This house was threatened with demolition when unfit houses were being cleared from Kilbarchan, and was rescued by The National Trust for Scotland, which opens it to visitors in the summer months.
