Scope and Content Millmannoch, South Ayrshire This was a good example of a small rural meal mill, and was probably rebuilt in the early 19th century, when high corn prices during the Napoleonic Wars encouraged millers to re-equip. It was again rebuilt in 1884, and finally in 1903, when a Hercules water turbine was installed, with three pairs of stones. This shows the sack hoist installed when the mill was rebuilt in 1903 in the brick attic extension formed at that time, as can be seen from the brick wall in the background. The cords with handles on the left run down to the ground floor, allowing the hoist to be operated remotely from any floor. Ayrshire became primarily a dairying country from the mid-19th century, reducing the market for milling, other than for animal provender. This mill was in 1966 still in occasional use for provender milling, being driven by a tractor when required. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
