Scope and Content Kildonan House, Barrhill, Ayrshire, from the south-west This photograph of the west front of Kildonan House, Barrhill, was taken in c.1927 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, when the house was the country retreat of Captain Euan Wallace, MP for Hornsea. The house, surrounded by 83 acres of mature woodland, was designed in the English Manorial Revival style. It has deeply pitched roofs and tall chimneys, and an interesting arrangement of short Tudor-style mullioned windows with metal casements. Kildonan was built on a grand scale by James Miller (1860-1947), one of the most eminent Scottish architects of the early 20th century. However, it proved to be 'too big for its setting, too big for its time' and, eventually, 'too big for its owner'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
