Scope and Content East Wing of the Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire, from the north-west This view across the garden to the east side of The Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, was taken in 1911 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, when the house was the country retreat of Lord Esher, secretary to King George V. The house, surrounded by 20 acres of gardens, stands in a woodland setting on the banks of the River Teith. The circular conical-roofed towers, which add considerably to the charm of the house, were added on the north and east sides in c.1840. The house, which took its name from a nearby Roman encampment, was originally built in the 17th century as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth. It was bought in the late 19th century by Lord Esher, and was sold for development as a hotel in 1939. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
