Scope and Content View from south-east of The Roman Camp Hotel, Callander, Perthshire The Roman Camp Hotel dates from the 17th century when it served as a hunting lodge for the Dukes of Perth. This photograph, taken in 1911 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shows the house after extensive remodelling by the then owner, Lord Esher. This large, rambling, harled house stands in a picturesque garden setting on the banks of the River Teith. The charming two-storeyed main block was remodelled in c.1840 when the circular conical-roofed towers were added to the north and east sides. In the late 19th century, the house, which took its name from the site of a Roman encampment nearby, became the country retreat of Reginald, Viscount of Esher who later became secretary to King George V. In 1939 it was developed as a hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
