Scope and Content Billiard Room, The George Hotel, Nos 235-45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow The George Hotel was remodelled in 1907 by the Glasgow architect, Neil Duff, from part of an earlier Victorian tenement, and the interior photographed in 1910 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The billiard room, created from smaller rooms of the original tenement, has two billiard tables, and leather seating for spectators around the walls. The tables are lit by six powerful electric lights, and three pendant lights hang over the seating area. The George Hotel was mainly a businessman's hotel, and the billiard room would have been a popular room for gentlemen. The game was played on an oblong cloth-covered table with balls struck with cues into pockets round the edge of the table. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
