Scope and Content Dining Room, The George Hotel, Nos 235-45 Buchanan Street, Glasgow This photograph of the dining room of the George Hotel was taken in 1910 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The hotel, designed in 1907 by the Glasgow architect, Neil Cameron Duff, was remodelled from part of an earlier Victorian building. The dining room, modelled from several, smaller Victorian rooms, retains the original cornice, but the stained-glass windows and electric light fittings are typically Edwardian. The tables, set for dinner, display napkins folded into a variety of forms. In 1910 less than five per cent of households had electricity, although public supplies were available in towns and cities. Its main criticism was its extreme brightness and glare, and many of the earlier electric light fittings were heavily shaded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
