Scope and Content Auditorium, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh, from the balcony The New Picture House opened in 1913 as one of Edinburgh's new 'refined' cinemas. In 1914 the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, took a series of photographs of the interior for the owners, Provincial Cinematographic Theatres. The auditorium had a coffered ceiling, and a plasterwork cornice with roundels at the corners. It had seating for almost 1,000 patrons, and its attractions included a full orchestra and an air-conditioning system that changed the air 12 times an hour. The opening show in 1913 included a golf lesson on film from J H Taylor, the Scottish Open champion. In 1929, the cinema scooped the first recognised Edinburgh 'talkie' when it showed 'The Singing Fool' starring Al Jolson. The film ran for five weeks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
