Scope and Content Auditorium, the New Picture House, No 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The New Picture House, designed by the architects, Atkinson & Alexander, opened in 1913 as one of Edinburgh's new 'refined' cinemas. This photograph of the auditorium was taken in 1914 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The auditorium, with an elaborately coffered ceiling, had seating for almost 1,000 people. Its attractions included a full orchestra to accompany the silent films, and an air-conditioning system, guaranteed to change the air 12 times an hour. Robert Atkinson, of the architectural firm, Atkinson & Alexander, also designed the Regent Cinema in Brighton in 1921. The Regent is generally acknowledged to be the first cinema of outstanding architectural importance to be built in Britain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
