Scope and Content Oak Café, the New Picture House, no 56 Princes Street, Edinburgh The Oak Café, on the lower floor of the New Picture House, Princes Street, was photographed in 1914 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, shortly after the cinema opened in 1913 as one of Edinburgh's new 'refined' theatres. The café, with ceiling beams and panelled walls, was designed in a 'country cottage' style. The table in the foreground, which is set for tea, may have been carefully positioned by Lemere, along with the cup and saucer on the table beside the armchair. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was one of the leading architectural photographers of his day. He was a perfectionist, and spent a great deal of time arranging furniture and objects in a room until the photographic composition was right. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
