Scope and Content Barskimming Mill, Mauchline, East Ayrshire This mill was on an old site. It was rebuilt in about 1834, when the lade was widened and deepened. The new mill had two waterwheels, driving six pairs of stones: two for shelling oats, two for finishing oatmeal, and two for flour or provender. This mill burned down in 1893, and was rebuilt by William Alexander. This shows the mill from the south, as rebuilt in about 1893. The fabric incorporated parts of the 1834 building. The new works were built of red brick. By 1966 the mill was in use as a light engineering factory, though little changed externally. This was one of the largest water-powered grain mills in Ayrshire. The 1834 rebuilding was probably prompted by the improvement of the water works associated with Catrine Cotton Mills, upstream, which, by using reservoirs above Muirkirk, ensured a regular flow of water during the mill's working hours.
