Scope and Content Gartcraig Bridge (Jessie's Bridge), Monkland Canal, Glasgow This bridge was built by the Monkland Canal Co in 1772, probably initially as an accommodation bridge to link pieces of land separated by the digging of the canal. It was generally typical of the surviving minor bridges on the canal. This shows the bridge from the south-west. As can be seen by the stepped abutments the bridge had been widened at some time, with steel joists supporting the deck of the addition. The original bridges had wooden beams supporting the deck. Traffic ceased on the canal in the 1930s, but it was maintained in water to supply water to the summit level of the Forth & Clyde Canal. It was piped for much of its length in 1972, and the M8 Monkland Motorway built over its bed. This bridge was obliterated during this process. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
