Scope and Content Millinery Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, Princes Street, was photographed in 1895 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. This view of the millinery department forms part of his unique photographic record of the interior design of a late-Victorian department store. The millinery department housed large glass-fronted display cabinets containing an array of feathered hats on brass stands, giving the impression of an exotic aviary. The window counters, amid their potted aspidistra plants, display straw boaters. When Charles Jenner & Company's store opened in Princes Street in 1895, it was one of the largest department stores in Britain, with over 60 departments selling a vast range of merchandise. 25,000 people visited the store on its first day of trading.
