Scope and Content Fabrics Hall, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh The Fabrics Hall of Charles Jenner & Company was photographed in 1895 by the distinguished Victorian photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. Jenners, designed in 1893-5 by William Hamilton Beattie, was one of the largest department stores in Britain. The Fabrics Hall, on the ground floor of a magnificent top-lit saloon with heavily consoled galleries, displayed a wide selection of prints, muslins and calicoes. The carefully positioned chairs all bear the store monogram 'C J' on their back rails. Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) photographed using a standard 12 by 10 stand camera with glass plate negatives, and, whenever possible, used daylight to photograph interiors. This gave his pictures a naturalness that can never be achieved by the use of flash. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
