Scope and Content Furniture Gallery, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh This view of the furniture gallery in Charles Jenner & Company's Princes Street store was taken in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The store was, when it opened in 1895, one of the largest department stores in Britain. The long gallery displays a huge array of Victorian bedroom furniture, including a long line of brass bedsteads. The light-coloured bedroom suite (left) is in the Art Nouveau style, a style which was, at that time, just beginning to emerge in Scotland. Harry Bedford Lemere's photographs of Jenners have provided an invaluable record, not only of the interior of a late 19th-century department store, but also of the new styles in furniture that were starting to appear at the beginning of the 20th century.
