Scope and Content Fabrics Hall, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, Princes Street, was designed in 1893-5 by William Hamilton Beattie. This view of the Fabrics Hall, photographed in 1895 by Harry Bedford Lemere, provides one of the few well-defined records of the interior of a late 19th-century department store. The Fabrics Hall, on the ground floor of a magnificent galleried saloon rising the full height of the building, was lit by elegant electric light fittings with lace-like shades. The stands (right) display a wide selection of prints, calicoes and muslins. Bedford Lemere (1864-1944), working with a standard 12 by 10 stand camera with glass plate negatives, was one of the most distinguished photographers of his day. A perfectionist, he would position furniture until the photographic composition was right. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
