Scope and Content Women's Fashion Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, designed in 1893-5 by Sir William Hamilton Beattie, was, when it opened in 1895, one of the 'wonders of Edinburgh'. This view of the women's fashion department was taken in 1895 by the distinguished photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The women's fashion department included this children's section. The large glass-fronted cabinet contains an array of pretty dresses, and the mannequins, which may have been positioned by Lemere for the photograph, display the latest fashions for girls. Harry Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) was a perfectionist, and was primarily concerned with 'doing a good job' for his clients, often private owners. If he could not manoeuvre his camera until a composition was right, he would sometimes move furniture instead. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
