Scope and Content Women's Fashion Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners, designed in 1893-5 by William Hamilton Beattie, was, when it opened in 1895, one of the 'wonders of Edinburgh' with over 60 departments. This view of the women's fashion department was taken in 1895 by the photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The extensive women's fashion department contained a huge range of ladies' wear, with dresses displayed on mannequins or hung on brass rails. The chair and the mannequins may have been carefully positioned for the photograph. Bedford Lemere (1864-1944) sometimes manoeuvred objects in a room until the photographic composition was right. He used daylight to photograph interiors, giving his pictures a softness and naturalness that could never be achieved by the use of flash. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
