Scope and Content Botanic Gardens Station, No 1057 Great Western Road, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, a line sponsored by the Caledonian Railway to construct an underground route through the city centre. This station was on the western section of the route, which terminated at Maryhill. This shows the main offices of the station, which were linked to the platforms, partly in tunnel, by covered stairways. The building was designed by James Miller, architect, and was the most flamboyant of his many stations. It had been closed as a station since 1939. The prosperity of this station, and of others to the west and north, was badly affected by the electrification of the Glasgow tramways in 1901-2, hence its early closure. The building, which was a notable landmark, was destroyed by fire in 1970. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
