Scope and Content View of the Main Staircase, Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The main staircase of Glasgow School of Art leads from the entrance hall in Renfrew Street to the museum on the first floor. This view, photographed in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows the half-landing and the memorial in marble to James Fleming. The stairwell, defined by three pairs of tall, tapering vertical posts, is lit, in contrast to the dark entrance hall, by light flooding down from the top-lit museum above. The half-landing originally led to the gentlemen's and ladies' luncheon rooms. Sir James Fleming (1831-1914) was the Chairman of the Board of Governors and the man chiefly responsible for raising the money to build the Glasgow School of Art. His memorial was designed by the English sculptor, George Frampton, and unveiled in 1903. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
