Scope and Content Entrance Hall, Glasgow School of Art, 1No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow The entrance hall of the Glasgow School of Art was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh as both passageway and meeting place. This photograph, taken in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows the hall flooded by light from the janitor's office on the right. The entrance hall is a wide, rather dark space, bisected by a sequence of solid square piers with recessed panels at the top. Low barrel-vaulted ceilings rise from either side of the piers, and the hall contains three benches. The recessed panels at the top of the piers remained empty until 1962-3 when they were filled with mosaic portraits of well-known artists and architects, including Sir Christopher Wren and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the architect of the School.
