Scope and Content View of the east corridor on the first floor of the Glasgow School of Art, No 167 Renfrew Street, Glasgow, looking west The east corridor, part of the second phase of building of the Glasgow School of Art, resembles an Antique Gallery, a feature of early Art Schools. This view, taken in 1910 by Harry Bedford Lemere, shows the original arrangement of plaster casts. This corridor, top-lit from curiously shaped roof lights, contains some of the School's huge collection of plaster casts. The ceiling has dark stained timber posts which extend down the walls to a timber rail which provides a place to exhibit more casts. In the first phase of the building of the School, the east corridor was used, because of pressure on space in the half-built School, as a work area for students. In the second phase the building, the corridor was used, as seen here, to display casts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
