Scope and Content View from south of the Red Road Development, Glasgow The Red Road development was approved in 1962, and comprises six, 31-storeyed tower blocks containing 720 flats, two 27-storeyed slab blocks and one three-storeyed block. They were designed by Sam Bunton & Associates for Glasgow Corporation. This photograph shows the development towering above its surroundings. Some of the tower blocks had red, blue or ochre cladding added in 1982, which makes them appear less stark. The blocks were made from asbestos panels (now replaced) on a steel frame. This development took seven years to complete, and houses the same number of people as a small town on its 8.7 hectare site. It was declared unfit for habitation in 1980 and converted into student and executive accommodation, and a YMCA. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
