Scope and Content Railway workers' housing, (Elmvale Row, Ashvale Row, Colgrain Terrace, Ratho Terrace, Fernbank Place and Eastfield Terrace) Springburn, Glasgow This housing was built from about 1863 for the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, to designs by Andrew Heiton, architect, of Perth, as a model community for the enginemen and skilled artisans working in their works and running sheds at Cowlairs, a short distance to the west. This shows the lower side of one of the three rows surviving in 1966. The turnpike stairs give access to the dwellings on the top level, and to the back doors of the dwellings on the middle level. The basement probably housed wash houses, coal cellars and privies. These houses were advanced for their date, and also remarkable for the monumental baronial architectural treatment. By the 1960s, however, they were distinctly below standard. These survivors were cleared and demolished in 1967. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
