Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This depot was completed in 1904 by the North British Railway to provide up to date facilities for handling the locomotives working on mainline services out of Glasgow, and local freight and suburban services. It replaced cramped provision in Cowlairs Works. This shows the shed offices, completed in 1902, from the south-west, looking across the turntable on the left, and the shed on the left. The shed in this view was rebuilt after a serious fire in 1919. In the background is the tower of the mechanical coaling plant installed in the 1940s. This shed remained in use after the end of steam traction in 1968, as a diesel locomotive maintenance depot, and new buildings were constructed for that purpose in about 1970. These have now been demolished, and the site is now used partly as a permanent way depot, and partly for stabling diesel trains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
