Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This depot was completed in 1904 by the North British Railway to provide up to date facilities for handling the locomotives working on mainline services out of Glasgow, and local freight and suburban services. It replaced cramped provision in Cowlairs Works. This shows the shed offices, completed in 1902, with one end of the turntable on the left, and the shed on the right. The shed in this view was rebuilt after a serious fire in 1919. The offices were used by drivers, firemen and other staff booking on for work, and by the shed staff. This shed remained in use after the end of steam traction in 1968, as a diesel locomotive maintenance depot, and new buildings were constructed for that purpose in about 1970. These have now been demolished, and the site is now used partly as a permanent way depot, and partly for stabling diesel trains. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
