Scope and Content Balornock Engine Shed, Glasgow This depot was built by the Caledonian Railway in 1916, to replace one situated within their main workshops nearer to the city centre. It housed locomotives working trains to Perth and Aberdeen, as well as those working more locally. This shows part of the depot from the south-east, with the main range of running sheds to the right. The small building with the chimney was used for drying sand to be used by locomotives to counteract greasy rails. The locomotive is one used at the time for services to Aberdeen. This shed closed in 1967, when the use of steam locomotives ended, and Buchanan Street Station closed. It was demolished in 1969. The Glasgow-Aberdeen line was the last in Scotland on which express trains were hauled by steam locomotives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
