Scope and Content Administration building, Hyde Park Locomotive Works, Flemington Street, Glasgow The North British Locomotive Co Ltd was established in 1903 by amalgamating Neilson, Reid & Co Ltd, Sharp, Stewart & Co Ltd and Dubs & Co Ltd, the three Glasgow private firms of locomotive builders. This block was built in 1909 to designs by James Miller, architect as the company's headquarters. This shows the main entrance to the building, which is built round a courtyard, and which housed drawing offices as well as the usual administrative functions of a large company. The entrance was designed to impress customers, and has a sculpture of a locomotive as its centrepiece. Declining world demand for locomotives in the later 1950s and 1960s, particularly for steam locomotives, led to the closure of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd in 1964. This block has been retained as part of North Glasgow College, a further education college. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
