Scope and Content Springburn Electricity Sub-station, Flemington Street, Glasgow This sub-station was built in 1906 for Glasgow Corporation Electricity Department. It was constructed to convert high-voltage alternating current (AC) from Port Dundas Power Station to low voltage direct current (DC) for distribution to factories, houses and other premises in the Springburn area. This shows the sub-station from the north-west. It was built to house rotary converters, which were large machines needing to be overhauled from time to time, so an overhead crane was fitted, hence the height of the building. To the right is part of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd's administration block of 1909. After the National Grid was set up Glasgow Corporation abandoned direct current distribution, and this sub-station was fitted with transformers, which have no moving parts. It is still in use.
