Scope and Content Hyde Park Locomotive Works, Flemington Street, Glasgow This works was established in 1860 by Neilson & Co, locomotive builders, as a rail-linked substitute for their original works in Hydepark Street, Finnieston. It was enlarged and partly rebuilt in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1903 Neilson, Reid & Co Ltd, then owners, became part of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd. This shows part of the frontage of the works to the Springburn branch of the North British Railway. The buildings in the centre are part of the original 1860 works. The platforms are part of Springburn Station, and in the distance is the Atlas Works originally built for the Clyde Locomotive Co Ltd in 1884. Declining world demand for locomotives in the later 1950s and 1960s, particularly for steam locomotives, led to the closure of the North British Locomotive Co Ltd in 1964. This works was demolished in 1969, but the company's administration block nearby is now a further education college. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
