Scope and Content Anderston Cross Station, Glasgow This station was opened in 1896 by the Glasgow Central Railway, which was built by the Caledonian Railway to link its Lanarkshire lines with the shipyards and other industries of the north bank of the River Clyde, via the associated Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway. This shows the surface building of the station, which housed the booking office, and had a stairway leading to an island platform in tunnel. The upper floor contained houses for staff. The building was designed by J J Burnet, a leading Glasgow architect. This station suffered, like others on the line, from competition with the Glasgow Corporation tramways, and closed in 1959. This surface building was demolished in 1967 as part of the comprehensive redevelopment of Anderston, but the station was reopened as part of the Argyle Line in the 1980s.
