Scope and Content The Institute, New Lanark, South Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1784 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright to spin cotton using Arkwright's package of processes in mills powered by water from the River Clyde. It was taken over by Robert Owen and partners in 1799, and was later owned by the Walker Brothers and by Birkmyre & Somerville. This shows Mr Gibson, one of the staff of the mills, then owned by the Gourock Ropeworks Co Ltd, with two whale-oil lamps. These lamps were used in the mills before the introduction of gas lighting. In the background are the mill lade, and the rear of the engine house added in 1881-2. The works gas supply was introduced between about 1820 and 1851, according to a drawings of the village. These lamps have been preserved by the New Lanark Conservation Trust. Whale oil was supplied fro a time from Hull. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
