Scope and Content Sir William Arrol's Works (Dalmarnock Iron Works), Dunn Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1868 by William Arrol to make structural ironwork for bridges, piers and related purposes. The firm became the leader in Britain in its field, and diversified into making hydraulic machinery, and into building steel-framed factory buildings. This shows the works' offices from the north-west. On the left is part of a former shuttle factory built in 1871, and then there are two blocks built in 1903 (centre) and 1906. The block on the right is probably post-1945. The workshops are behind and to either side of these buildings. The structural engineering firm of Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd was founded in Dunn Street in about 1868, and expanded to cover almost the whole of a large block. Demand for the company's products declined in the later 20th century, and the works was closed and demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
