Scope and Content Broomielaw Bridge, Glasgow The first bridge on this site was built in 1768-72 to designs by William Mylne, architect, of Edinburgh. It was replaced in 1833-5 to a design by Thomas Telford. In 1894-9 this was replaced to designs by Blyth & Westland, retaining the profile, and some of the granite cladding of Telford's bridge. This shows the bridge from the south-east, showing the slenderness of the piers characteristic of the last generation of masonry bridges. Behind it is the first Central Station Bridge, designed by Blyth & Cunningham, and completed in 1878. The succession of bridges on this site was necessary to accommodate growing road traffic, especially, in the case of the 1890s bridge, horse-tram traffic. Until the 1920s this was the lowest road crossing of the River Clyde. It is still in use for main road traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
