Scope and Content Custom House Quay, Glasgow This quay was constructed in 1852-7 for the Clyde Navigation Trust, to expand the capacity of Glasgow Harbour by catering for coastal steamers, which had to be small enough to pass under Thomas Telford's Glasgow Bridge, usually with funnels and masts folded down. This shows the eastern section of the quay from the south-west. This part was used primarily for sand and gravel traffic, with crushed granite coming from Argyllshire quarries. The wooden-sided bins for storing gravel can be seen behind the electric cranes. The SV 'Carrick' is at the far end of the quay. The cranes and other structures seen here were all cleared away soon after this photograph was taken, and the quay wall lowered as part of the Clyde Walkway, laid out in the early 1970s along the north bank of the river on what had become disused quay walls.
