Scope and Content Infirmary Suspension Footbridge, Ness Walk, Inverness, Highland For many years Inverness had the largest group of suspension bridges in Scotland. Two of the five such bridges in the city were built in 1881, with lattice girder pylons and light steel decks supported on wire-rope cables, then a novel technique of construction. This shows the bridge from the north, illustrating the lightness of appearance of the lattice girder construction of the piers. The anchorage of the right-hand cable can just be seen. This bridge was designed by C R Manners and built by W Smith & Sons, Ness Iron Works, Inverness. In the 1970s there were proposals to replace this bridge by a modern one, but these were opposed, and instead the bridge was overhauled in the 1980s, retaining its original appearance.
