Scope and Content Eglinton Engine Works, Cook Street, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1855 by A & W Smith & Co, general engineers. It was enlarged in the early 1870s to make structural ironwork, but eventually specialised in making sugar machinery, becoming the last works in Glasgow to make such equipment. This shows part of the original works of about 1855 on the left, and the 1870s additions in the centre. The block on the right is the one added for structural work, and the multi-storeyed section was built as a store for the wooden patterns used to make the castings from which the firm's products were made. Smiths made steam and air hammers under the name of R G Ross, Loudon planing machines, and latterly Mirrlees sugar machinery. They became part of the Tate & Lyle group. The works closed in about 1990 and is currently derelict. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
