Scope and Content Gravestone of John King, Old Parish Church, Boyndie, Aberdeenshire This gravestone features an angel of the Resurrection, wearing a sash and loincloth, trumpeting to awake the dead on the Day of Judgement. The scroll issuing from the trumpet provides a resting place for the angel's feet, and carries an inscription which includes the lines: 'Arise ye dead'. At the top of the stone is a rosette, an emblem of rebirth. The imagery of many Resurrection scenes found on gravestones is derived from the following text from I Corinthians 15: 51-2: 'Behold, I show you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed'. This gravestone commemorates John King, who died in 1764. It is inscribed: 'Here lies the body of John King/sometime in Dolohie who/departed April ye 29 1764/Erected by Margaret Bunce/his loving spouse'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
